We are pleased to announce that the NIH Grants Policy Statement was recently updated, replacing the December 2021 version as standard terms and conditions of award. Consistent with longstanding federal regulations, institutions receiving NIH support will now be required to have internal controls to assure compliance with terms and conditions of award. These internal controls include behavioral codes of conduct to assure safe and healthful working conditions for their employees and foster work environments conducive to high-quality research.

We are excited to announce the release of a new funding opportunity aimed at strengthening the NIH Proof of Concept Network, an academic innovation ecosystem converting scientific discoveries into biomedical products at over 79 research institutions across 19 states. The funding will be used to stand up five new hubs that will increase research and development impact as well as stimulate regional innovation partnerships.

Ensuring a strong and diverse workforce is a top priority for NIH. To this end, we regularly assess the sex/gender, race, and ethnicity of NIH-supported researchers to better understand the composition of our workforce and participation in our programs. Investigators may self-report their disability status along with these other demographic characteristics on their eRA personal profile. This allows us to learn more about researchers with disabilities in the NIH-supported scientific workforce.

Today we published our first NIH UNITE Progress Report! Covering Fiscal Years 2021–2022, the UNITE Progress Report describes NIH’s actions to identify and address structural racism that may exist within the NIH and in the biomedical and behavioral research enterprise.

We looked at applications broken down by career stage in June 2022. It was interesting to notice slowly increasing trends in the proportions of early stage investigator applications submitted by women and by underrepresented minorities. We repeat these career stage analyses here, specifically focusing on applications received between January 8 and September 7 in six consecutive years.

Earlier this year, we posted a blog about inequalities in Research Project Grant (RPG) support for extramural principal investigators (PIs). Many comments to that post requested data on time-related trends of number of RPGs supporting individual PIs.

The Center for Scientific Review (CSR) announce the release of the CSR 2022-2027 Strategic Plan. CSR is entrusted with most of the peer review that enables NIH to support a broad range of biomedical research. Our primary goal, to ensure that peer review identifies the strongest, most promising science, depends upon an evaluation process that is fair, independent, expert, timely and free from inappropriate influences.

In response to the OIG recommendations, we are reminding grant applicants and recipients again today of NIH’s Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) and Other Support grant requirements. We encourage all those involved in the NIH grants process to review this information carefully to ensure compliance.
