New Funding Opportunities with a Focus on Workforce Diversity

The biomedical research enterprise relies on engaging talented researchers from all groups, including individuals from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research. As I described earlier here on the blog, NIH has planned the launch of several programs to increase workforce diversity. I’m excited to let you know that on December 19 we issued the funding announcements for the three core initiatives that make up the Common Fund “Enhancing the Diversity of the NIH-Funded Workforce” program. ….

Diversity—Looking at the Numbers

As I posted last month, the Advisory Committee to the NIH Director (ACD) heard recommendations from several working groups at its June 14 meeting, including the one tasked with studying the recruitment and retention of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, people with disabilities, and people from disadvantaged backgrounds in biomedical research careers.

Provide Your Input on Workforce Diversity and Research Data Policies

Earlier this month, two working groups of the Advisory Committee to the Director released two requests for information to seek public opinion about two different, but important issues facing biomedical research.

Fostering Workforce Diversity

Beginning this month, we will be accepting applications for the NIH Director’s ARRA Pathfinder Award to Promote Diversity in the Scientific Workforce. This program challenges the research community to develop new approaches to biomedical workforce diversity. We hope that creative scientists will accept this challenge. We anticipate making five, 3-year awards, for $2 million each, to stimulate the development of new ideas to address this very difficult problem.

Changes Coming to Applications and Peer Review in January 2025

NIH is implementing multiple changes that will impact the preparation and peer review of most grant applications submitted to NIH for due dates on or after January 25, 2025. Although each of these initiatives have specific goals, they are all meant to simplify, clarify, or ensure greater fairness.
