At the Advisory Committee to the Director’s meeting today and yesterday, NIH director Francis Collins, NIH deputy director Lawrence Tabak, and I presented some exciting new initiatives in support of the future of biomedical research.
It has been an exciting time at the NIH over the past two days. The Advisory Committee to the NIH Director (ACD) met for its regular biannual meeting on campus, and the agenda was jam-packed.
As you may remember from previous blog posts, a working group of the Advisory Committee to the NIH Director began studying the biomedical research workforce and published a request for information asking for input last fall.
I am pleased that the White House has re-announced the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring.
These programs fund individuals using innovative approaches to address major challenges in biomedical or behavioral research.
Institutional Training grant applications are transitioning to electronic submission for due dates of January 25 and beyond. Applications originally submitted in paper for earlier due dates that are being resubmitted as amended applications must also be submitted electronically.
NIH welcomes proposals for 2010 NIH Director’s Pioneer Awards and New Innovator Awards. Both programs are part of the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research http://nihroadmap.nih.gov and support exceptionally creative scientists who take highly innovative, potentially high-impact approaches to major challenges in biomedical or behavioral research.
Academic Research Enhancement Awards (AREAs) support biomedical research projects at health professional schools and colleges and universities that have not traditionally been major recipients of NIH research funding. Our new NIH Director, Dr. Francis S. Collins, took the helm on Monday, August 17. A bold leader with bold ideas, Dr. Collins combines deep knowledge of NIH with broad, thoughtful perspective on the biomedical research enterprise. During his first day on the job, Dr. Collins addressed NIH staff, outlining five key themes for the agency-five themes tied together by the value they gain from extramural research.
The effectiveness of NIH extramural stewardship is directly relevant to the improvement of public health. The Office of Extramural Research is at the core of promoting effective stewardship by working with the Institutes, Centers, and Offices to create, harmonize, and implement policies spanning the full spectrum of the grant making and monitoring process. In times of change, our responsibility is further heightened by the need for making OER services as responsive and transparent as possible.
