In December 2018, the NIH Advisory Committee to the Director (ACD) offered a number of recommendations to NIH on the “Next Generation Researchers Initiative.” Among those: The Committee recommended “special funding consideration for “at-risk” investigators. These are researchers who developed meritorious applications who would not have significant NIH research funding if the application under consideration is not awarded. We plan to draw more attention this year, both inside and outside NIH, to outcomes for at-risk investigators, to ensure those submitting meritorious ideas to NIH are not lost to the system.

The 21st Annual U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Small Business Programs Conference, scheduled for April 28-30, 2020 at the Luxor Hotel Las Vegas will be hosted by University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The conference will offer over 40 sessions focused on successfully submitting funding applications, approaching potential partners and investors, accessing the technical assistance programs HHS offers to awardees, and discussing specific questions with HHS SBIR/STTR subject-matter experts.

With the coming of spring, eRA modules and data will be migrated to the Amazon Web Services cloud. From 8 a.m. ET on Friday, April 17 to 8 p.m. ET on Monday, April 20, all eRA modules will be unavailable. This effort will affect all the eRA modules (eRA Commons, ASSIST, IAR, iEdison, etc.) and informational websites (era.nih.gov, etc.). Any affected due dates will be extended and the 2-day viewing window for successfully submitted applications will be adjusted to provide the full two days.

As of January 20, 2020, studies subject to the Revised Common Rule Cooperative Research Provision (45 CFR 46.114(b)) must use a single IRB as required by the terms and conditions of award. This includes studies that are not subject to the NIH sIRB policy – such as domestic, multisite career development (K) and fellowship (F) awards.
