Dr. Jodi Black will be joining the NIH Office of Extramural Research (OER) as its deputy director. Dr. Black is currently the acting director of the NIH National Health Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Division of Extramural Research Activities.
Dr. Black has held a variety of leadership positions at NIH as well as in the private sector. Early in her NIH career she was a program officer and director of the Office of the AIDS Malignancy Program at the National Cancer Institute. From 2005 through 2009 she served as director of research administration and vice president of research administration at the Translational Genomics Research Institute. In her current role at NHLBI, Dr. Black leads and manages the institute’s extramural research and training programs. She also established several innovative trans-NIH programs to support the development and transition of NIH-supported research technologies to the private sector, and to increase and expedite the translation of basic science discoveries into new diagnostics, devices, treatments, and patient services.
Prior to her leadership roles in research administration, Dr. Black was a research microbiologist at the Center for Disease Control (CDC), where she served as the head for the CDC Cellular Virology Lab in the Herpes Virus section. She has a B.A. in biology from Rollins College, an MMSc in clinical microbiology from Emory University, and a Ph.D. in experimental pathology from Emory University.
