We know navigating the NIH grants process can be overwhelming for those new to working with NIH. Orienting the extramural community to that process is a central mission of the NIH Office of Extramural Research (OER) while ensuring the transparency of the peer review process is a key goal of the Center for Scientific Review (CSR). Together, OER and CSR play an integral role in educating and updating the extramural community with the latest information on grants processes, policies, and resources.

This past spring, OER and CSR partnered to present a 1-hour webinar, A Walk-Through of the NIH Grants Process. We are again combining efforts for an expanded, two-part, interactive virtual event – NIH Grants Process Primer: Application to Awardtaking place on November 13-14, 2024 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. ET (see this promotional video).

Led by NIH experts, this event will cover key aspects of the grants process, available resources, and related systems. The content and interactive approach are designed for institutional grant administrators and investigators new to NIH grants processes. But anyone seeking a better understanding of the grants process is encouraged to attend.

Part One is an overview of the grants process, where attendees will learn about pre-award activities and resources – from application planning through the review process to award determination. In Part Two, attendees will interact with live demonstrations focused on NIH systems and resources. NIH experts will be available to address live and pre-submitted questions during both parts. Topics being covered include:

  • Roles and responsibilities of key NIH staff and key personnel at the applicant institution
  • NIH grant application and peer review processes
  • Application materials, instructions, and required electronic systems
  • NIH resources to help you stay informed

OER and CSR frequently receive questions from the extramural community about the grants process, especially how to apply for funding. Webinars such as this one and the NIH Virtual Grants Conference are one way we address the community’s questions. OER and CSR also continually create resources and tools to help. For instance, OER has recently redesigned its website, including sections devoted to the grants process overview, news and events, and content for those new to NIH. And CSR has developed an array of resources devoted to the peer review process including an infographic for grants administrators and scientists new to the NIH grants process.

We encourage you to register to join us for this two-part webinar. In the meantime, you may wish to review the resources on the NIH Grants site including those from our previous Grants conferences.

  1. My name is Vivian Valiente and I work for Albizu University in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

I am registered for this webinar but I will not be able to participate because I am attending another workshop on the same days.

My question is if after the webinar, you will be able to share with me the information offered in the Webinar.

    1. Hi, yes – a recording and transcript of the webinar will be available in 7-10 business days after the event concludes on the event page.
