In August I let you know about an upcoming collaboration opportunity allowing extramural researchers to use the amazing resources of the NIH Clinical Center and collaborate with intramural researchers here at NIH. I’m happy to announce that the official funding opportunity announcement (FOA) was published Wednesday: Opportunities for Collaborative Research at the NIH Clinical Center (PAR-13-029). Twelve NIH institutes will participate in this cooperative agreement program, as will two NIH director’s offices. The FOA goes into detail about the specific research priorities of the program, but start planning now. The first submission date is February 20, 2013 and extramural investigators must have a collaborating investigator in the NIH intramural research program.
The NIH Clinical Center has also put together a great website for you to learn more about what’s going on at the Clinical Center that may be of interest to you. The “Collaborator’s Toolkit” on the right side of the page contains several notably helpful tools – a guide on how to find a collaborator and initiate a collaboration, a directory of available resources (e.g., biomedical specimens, equipment, unique data sets) and more.

At the present time there are 12 NIH Institutes/Centers (ICs) participating in the FOA for the March 20, 2013 receipt date. It is possible that other ICs, like NIDDK, might join the FOA in the future for subsequent receipt dates in 2014 and 2015, but such a decision is made by the individual ICs. So, at present, in order to submit an application for the March 20, 2013 receipt date, your research project would need to be relevant to the research interests and priorities of one of the 12 participating ICs. We suggest discussing your project with the IC or ICs that may have shared or related research interests. The IC scientific/research contacts are listed at the end of the FOA.

Who is in charge of this facility? How is their work load? Do they have resources to synthesize compounds for the proposed project?
The “Resources” directory on the Clinical Center website not only provides a list of available resources, but also links to websites with further resource information, and contact information for facility leads and potential collaborators. (Here is a direct link to the resource page on the drug formulation facility). For specific information related to your proposed projects’ needs, we recommend talking to the facility contact for the most up-to-date information. We also encourage early contact with Clinical Center staff.
