The Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) grants support small research projects conducted by faculty and students at institutions that have not been major recipients of NIH research grant funds. This program has long sought to strengthen the research environment at such institutions by supporting the meritorious research of investigators who will then be able to involve students in the research process. Thanks to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, applicants to the AREA grants program may now apply for through an ARRA specific-RFA and may request a maximum of $300,000 total direct costs plus applicable Facilities and Administrative (F&A)/ indirect costs for the entire project period of up to three years.

AREA grant applications must be received by September 24, 2009. In addition, the AREA grants Program Announcement will be reissued this September and will maintain the ARRA RFA funding levels and eligibility requirements.

The deadline for “Grand Opportunity” grant applications has been extended from May 27th to May 29th.The Grand Opportunity (GO) grants program will support high impact ideas that lend themselves to short-term funding and may lay the foundation for new fields of investigation. Your application may propose to address either a specific research question or the creation of a unique resource designed to accelerate scientific progress in the future.

The total cost amount for individual GO grant awards will vary and will be commensurate with the scope and complexity of the project and the number of participating institutions. Only applications that require $500,000 or more in total costs are expected to be funded. The duration of award is limited to two years.
