In April, NIH launched a new reporting system for requests to use chimpanzees in research, which must be reviewed by the NIH Chimpanzee Research Use Panel (CRUP).
The CRUP review process was developed following an NIH-commissioned Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on chimpanzee use in research, and recommendations from the Council of Councils, an advisory body to NIH. As described in NIH Guide Notice NOT-OD-14-024, the CRUP will review whether requests to the NIH to use chimpanzees in research are consistent with IOM principles and criteria, independent from existing NIH review processes.
The new Chimpanzee Research Use (CRU) reporting system is now fully implemented and integrated with eRA systems. If an NIH IC is considering funding an application involving chimpanzee research, an email notification will be sent from the CRU reporting system to both the principal investigator and the institutional signing official, describing additional information needed from the investigator. As described in the April 2015 NIH Guide Notice NOT-OD-15-097, additional information required from the investigators must be submitted through the CRU reporting system, and the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare or the CRUP will review the information provided. Read the Notice for more details.
