I’ll be at the June Advisory Council to the Director (ACD) meeting this Thursday and Friday. Several updates and reports from ACD working groups are on the agenda.
Two working groups will be presenting reports on the topics they were charged to explore. Following President Obama’s announcement of a bold new research initiative designed to revolutionize our understanding of the human brain, NIH invited experts to serve as advisers for carrying out this initiative. Tomorrow, this working group for the BRAIN initiative will present their recommendations and a scientific plan to advance innovation and technologies in the field of neuroscience. Friday, the physician-scientist workforce working group will present their report on their activities and recommendations. You may recall that the group has been gathering data and analyses regarding the size and demographics of the physician-scientist biomedical workforce, and based on this data, will make recommendations for sustaining and strengthening a diverse and well-trained cadre of clinician-scientists.
In addition, we’ll hear updates from the ACD diversity working group and its peer review subgroup (whose work we described in the Rock Talk co-blog last week), a talk by Philip Bourne, NIH’s first director for data science, and more.
