How Are Childcare Costs for NRSA Trainees and Fellows Requested?

In case you missed it, NIH is increasing the childcare support to $3,000 for applicable NRSA individual fellowships and institutional training awards effective beginning with fiscal year (FY) 2024 awards. The process for requesting childcare costs has not changed. We’re here to help you take advantage of this support. Read on to learn how institutions can request childcare costs for full-time predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees appointed on NRSA institutional research training awards and full-time NIH-NRSA supported fellowship positions.

Fellowship applicants and recipients may request the NRSA childcare costs as part of new applications, through the Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR), or as an administrative supplement request. For NRSA training grants, childcare costs will generally be provided based on the number of trainee slots awarded; no additional action is needed on the part of the applicant at the time of application to request these funds.
