Will I Lose Early Stage Investigator (ESI) Status if I have an Investigator-Initiated Research Award (IIRA) as the PI from the Department of Defense (DOD)? See this link for description of such award: https://cdmrp.health.mil/pubs/press/2022/22prppreann#:~:text=Investigator%2DInitiated%20Research%20Award
The answer to above question seems to be a no based on review of the responses of NIH staff in July 2019 and July 2020 on this blog post (https://nexus.od.nih.gov/all/2019/03/01/still-have-questions-on-the-nih-early-stage-investigator-esi-policy/). However, I would like to get a latest confirmation on it.
Yes, we can confirm that the previous responses still stand. To be eligible for ESI status requires that the writer has not previously competed successfully as PD/PI for a substantial NIH research award.
