New Guidance on Significant Changes That Require IACUC Review

Posted

The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) issued new guidance on what is considered a significant change to ongoing animal activities. The guidance was announced in an NIH Guide Notice (NOT-OD-14-126), and outlines the types of changes to research activities that must be reviewed and approved by Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUCs). The IACUC now has some discretion to use IACUC-reviewed and IACUC-approved policies to define what it considers a significant change, or to establish a mechanism for determining significance on a case-by-case basis in accordance with the PHS Policy IV.C.1.a-g.  Additional resources, such as a recording of a special seminar on this topic, can be found on OLAW’s Significant Changes webpage.
