Progress Reporting Changes for Multi-year Funded Awards

Posted

NIH is transitioning progress reporting to the federal government-wide Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR). As of January 31, progress reports for NIH multi-year funded awards will also transition to using the RPPR. Earlier in 2013, NIH began requiring the use of the RPPR for Streamlined Noncompeting Award Process (SNAP) and Fellowship progress reports, and is currently piloting implementation for non-SNAP RPPRs.

Since NIH’s budget is determined annually by a new Congressional appropriation each year, NIH awards most grant funding in 12-month increments. (See this description of the project period system for more information.) However, there are some grants that are multi-year funded, where the budget and project period are the same, and extend beyond one year. Some examples of NIH activity codes that traditionally are multi-year funded include the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award (DP2), the Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA or R15), the Type 1 Diabetes Targeted Research Award (DP3), and Research Facilities Construction Grants (C06).

For more information on submitting progress reports for multi-year funded awards, see NIH Guide notice NOT-OD-14-026. For a summary of NIH’s implementation of the RPPR and helpful links, visit this one-page reference put together by the NIH Office of Extramural Research.
