When Can I Propose More than One PI in my Application?

Posted

Electronic Applications

We allow you to identify more than one principal investigator (PI) in most research grant applications submitted electronically.

There are some exceptions where you cannot use the multiple PI option and that will be stated in the funding opportunity announcement. For example, you cannot designate more than one PI for the following types of grants:

  • Individual career awards
  • Individual fellowships
  • Dissertation grants
  • Director’s Pioneer awards
  • Shared instrumentation grants

The multiple PI option will be extended to most other applications when they transition to electronic format.

Paper Applications

Applications submitted on paper forms allow more than one PI only when the multiple PI option is specified in the funding opportunity announcement. Paper applications submitted with more than one PI when the option is not specified in the funding opportunity announcement may be delayed in the review process or returned.
