Modeled after the first symposium on Animal Welfare and Scientific Research (AWSR) in 1984, NIH is co-sponsoring a two day symposium, “Recognizing 25 Years of Improving Animal Welfare, Advancing Science,” October 25-26 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Convention Center, Bethesda, MD. The event recognizes the achievements of two and a half decades of biomedical research conducted under the U.S. Government Principles, the PHS Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Animal Welfare Act and Regulations.

The symposium is an opportunity to develop an understanding of past achievements, engage in strategic planning for the future, and learn about advances in science and animal welfare. Sessions on day one focus on animal housing facilities, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees, education and training, and veterinary care. Dr. Charles McCarthy gives the keynote address Monday evening, “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants.” On Tuesday, leading biomedical scientists make presentations highlighting their contributions to advancing human and animal health.

The NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and IACUC 101 are supporting this training event for IACUC members and animal program personnel. Pre-conference IACUC 101 and AWIC Workshops will be held on October 24, 2010. Continuing education credits can be earned and early registration has been extended to September 15, 2010.
