LRP Awards Continue Investment in Emerging Scientists

It’s not too late to apply for a fiscal year 2010 award! The 2010 application cycle will remain open until 8 p.m. EST on December 1, 2009. Programs are available in clinical research, pediatric research, health disparities research, clinical research for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, and contraception and infertility research.

Want to know if you qualify for an LRP award? Applicants must possess:

  • a doctoral-level degree (with the exception of the Contraception and Infertility Research LRP);
  • devote at least 20 hours per week to research funded by a domestic nonprofit, university or U.S. government entity;
  • have qualifying educational loan debt equal to or exceeding 20 percent of their institutional base salary; and
  • be a U.S. citizen, national or permanent resident.

In fiscal year 2009, NIH Institutes and Centers awarded 1,064 loan repayment program (LRP) contracts, totaling an investment of nearly $73.6 million in early career researchers. The loan repayment program repays qualified educational debt up to $35,000 per year in exchange for a two-year research commitment at a domestic nonprofit, university or government organization.

Behind the scenes of this success is an OER team in the Division of Loan Repayment that processed approximately 25,000 payments and credits, answered 15,000 phone inquiries, responded to 15,500 e-mails, processed 1,300 tax reimbursement requests, attended nearly 20 scientific conferences, and made several technology improvements, including a redesigned Web site and participant portal.
