Challenge Grant Applications are In!

Posted

Approximately 15,000 Challenge Grant applications are working their way through the submission process. Applications submitted by the initial April 27 deadline have until Friday, May 8 to complete the submission process.

The number of applications submitted to the Challenge Grants funding opportunity nearly matches the total number of applications NIH receives in a regular Council round. All NIH grant applications, including the Challenge Grants, go through a two-stage peer review, consisting of an Initial Review Group followed by an Advisory Council review. We expect to engage 10,000 to 15,000 scientists in the review of these applications.

All Challenge Grant applications will receive their summary statements and criterion scores from the peer reivew. We expect these scores and statements to be available by August 2009.

While around 200 Challenge Grants will be funded by the NIH Office of the Director through the Common Fund and other monies, it is likely that an equal or greater number of projects will be funded by NIH Institutes and Centers. Awards will be issued no later than September 30, 2009.
