Reminder: Domestic Animal Welfare Assurances Renewals Only for Institutions with Current Funding

Posted

Before NIH awards a grant or contract that involves the use of animals, the recipient institution and all research sites using animals must have an approved Animal Welfare Assurance with the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW). The Assurance is a contract between NIH and the institution to ensure that its animal care and use program operates in compliance with federal policies, laws, and regulations.

Currently, OLAW accepts domestic research institutions’ Animal Welfare Assurance renewal submissions every 4 years regardless of whether or not the institution currently receives funding from NIH or any Public Health Service (PHS) agency, provided that the institution submits their renewal prior to the expiration date. As of December 1, 2014, OLAW will only renew domestic Assurances if the institution has current PHS funding. Read more in the May NIH Guide Notice announcing this change.
