NIH Releases FY09 Estimates of Funding for Various Diseases, Conditions, and Research Areas

Posted

This week, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) released detailed FY2009 funding information for 218 major areas based on the knowledge management and computerized, standardized tools known as the Research, Condition and Disease Categorization process. The RCDC process was initiated at the request of Congress to provide consistent and transparent NIH research funding information.

The new information is reported in a table titled, “Estimates of Funding for Various Diseases, Conditions, and Research Areas,” located at www.report.nih.gov/rcdc/categories.

The public can use this information to view the total funds spent in each category for fiscal year 2009 and previous fiscal years based on grants, contracts, and intramural research (research conducted in the NIH’s own laboratories and clinics). By clicking on each of the categories, the public can access full project listings for that category and view, print, or download the detailed report.

The 218 categories reported through the RCDC process are the same ones that have historically been requested by and reported to Congress and the public at the end of each fiscal year. The RCDC process does not reflect the entire NIH research portfolio and budget, nor does RCDC impact the way the NIH funds research or determines its research priorities. Also, the RCDC process does not change the way the NIH makes awards throughout the year for medical research, or the way researchers apply for grants.
