New Tool to Replace and Enhance CRISP: Providing Insight into NIH Research Funding and Results

Posted

Comprehensive funding information for NIH grants and contracts will soon be available online through the National Institutes of Health Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool Expenditures and Reports (RePORTER). Like its predecessor CRISP–NIH’s longstanding database of funded projects–RePORTER allows users to locate and view NIH awards using their own search criteria. RePORTER, however, gives users access to detailed budget information, as well as research results and products, including patents and publications. Data from 1985 through to the present–including the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA) of 2009–are available and searchable according to user interest.

RePORTER acts the interactive counterpart to NIH RePORT–the central repository for all NIH reports. RePORTER is housed on the RePORT website at www.report.nih.gov, and it complements RePORT data with visualization tools including maps, charts, and refined searches that show the geographic distribution of NIH funds, illustrate federal investment across scientific concepts, and highlight emerging trends and techniques for individual projects or investigators funded by NIH.

Both RePORTER and RePORT will be continuously enhanced to bring greater querying and reporting capabilities, and RePORTER will continue to provide further linkages with related sources of information on federally-funded biomedical research.

NIH is committed to providing the highest quality research-funding data in the most user-friendly format. This may be of particular interest for ARRA funding data, allowing users to see Recovery Act dollars invested for research in their area. We welcome your comments and ideas as to how we how we may further help the public visualize the connection between research products and the budgets and expenditures facilitating the work.
